The theme of Rogers’ essay is that she is not only
interested in driving kayaks alone but also enjoy the adventure with Emily on
driving kayaks, biking in the dark or swimming in the dark. She really wants to
have some experiences that she has never tried.
Rogers says, “A peace descends and I notice the blue herons
perched high in the trees before they swoop down, their enormous wings beating
vigorously to keep their streamlined bodies in the air, their long awkward legs
extended, a narrow rudder in the wind.” The description is really vivid. From
the actions of the blue herons, I can feel the author’s dangerous situation.
“River grass snags my
paddles, so each dip is like treading, with my arms, in the thickest
milkshake.” This description is really impressive. The author says that she is
like at “milkshake”. It explains how hard to move in that river.
