Bicycle Love Response

The theme of Brianne Goodspeed's work Bicycle Love is the journey toward finding your "pilgrimage" and that you have the power to take control of your own life. This is exemplified in several excerpts from the passage including, "She had the subtle confidence of a woman at the reins of her own life," which shows Goodspeed's admiration for Green Knee's control of her life. The theme is also shown throughout the repetition of the phrase, "You're on a pilgrimage." The reader can also see the progression in the story from hesitation to confidence through her diction and the eventual focus on independence, which demonstrates the change Goodspeed underwent during her journey.

An example of Goodspeed's language use that was effective is "he said that I should stay another day because love is like the Tour de France. You wait and wait and then it passes like lightning before you even know what has happened." I viewed this passage as effective because it used a biking reference as a simile for the fleeting moments of life and love, which is similar to the theme of the passage. It encompasses Goodspeed's journey to treasure these fleeting moments as she takes control of her life, but also serves as a cute passage to get a giggle out of the reader. Another example of Goodspeed's language use that was effective was, "I felt the rush of power that a man must feel as he grabs a girl around the waist and scoops her up onto his horse." I chose this excerpt because it is a relatable notion for the audience to connect to Goodspeed's feelings and emotions as she goes through this journey. It creates a visual picture for the reader to relate to and exemplifies the theme of taking power and control over your own life.
