Ascension in the Moonlight

I think the theme in Winchester’s Ascension in the Moonlight is to never take any part of a trip for granted. He thought arriving on this island would just be a quick stop on his way to London, but it actually became a place that stood out in his mind after the whole journey. He experienced new friendships and a magical night at the beach.

“If I played my cards right, I could get myself out of here” (263) all Winchester wants to do is get back to London. Once he arrives at Ascension Island he creates new relationships with Paul and Angela, watches sea turtles lay eggs, and sees a comet flash across the sky. When he finally gets to London and tells the tailor about his trip to Ascension Island the tailor replies “You know, you are a very, very lucky man indeed” (271). And it finally sets in that the island, an unplanned stop he took for granted, was the greatest part of his trip.
