Bicycle Love Response

Hi everyone! My name is Margit and I'm from Ames, Iowa. A fun fact about me is that I'm from Ecuador, so my family goes there every year to visit family.

The main theme in Bicycle Love by Brianne Goodspeed is discovery. Throughout the story, she discovers so much about herself by being in a brand new place. She discovers she can be herself without her relationship, apartment, or job. She discovers she can get a new bike and become one with it as she gets used to it. She discovers everyone she encounters on her journey is very willing to help, and she discovers she is indeed a francophile. This main theme of discovery is very evident along with smaller underlying themes such as perseverance and freedom. I believe the main theme is discovery because all of her pilgrimage is about realizing new things about herself and figuring out who she wants to be. The theme of discovery even continues with her traveling, and being in France where she can't speak the language very well, and by the end of the trip doesn't want to leave.

An example of Godspeed's language that I like is how she builds the background well so that later on she can provide short sentences to get her point across effectively. For example, when she is talking to Bernard at the bike shop, she writes "I wasn't afraid anymore. The terror had burned off, like calories, during the three-week ride. The bike-which at first made me feel vulnerable-now empowered me. Strangers-whom I initially found threatening-had actually gone out of their way to look out for me." This language is descriptive, using similes and concise background information to make the reader stay interested and think back to what she had already described.
