The theme of this article is that cycling is an exhausting journey, but cycling has become Goodspeed’s memorable pilgrimage. This is because Goodspeed met lots of difficulties like getting lost, feeling extremely tired, and meeting with rainstorm when she was cycling in France. The cycling journey really made her tired. However, she didn’t give up, and she thought that she and her bicycle were a team. At the end of her journey, she even didn’t want to go back to the US. As a result, the cycling changed her. In cycling, she became indomitable and enjoyed cycling. Therefore, she saw this journey as a pilgrimage.
About Goodspeed’s language, she writes “I loved France for being my place of pilgrimage. I felt forever changed by it.” These two sentences attract me a lot. Goodspeed uses the abstract meaning in these two sentences. They explain that she really misses the cycling in France. Cycling is meaningful and memorable for her. Another example is “At the shop, he showed me a silver, ultralight Cannondale Bad Boy with super-slick tires and a beautiful frame.” Goodspeed uses many detailed features to describe her bike. She calls her bike “Bad Boy”. As seen, she really likes her bike. From the language, it proves that she has a strong emotion to her bike because of the cycling in France.
