The Temptation of Two by Susan Fox Rogers Post

I believe that the theme of Rogers' essay is self-identity. Throughout this essay Rogers questions her actions and if she would behave differently if she were alone or with her kayaking partner Emily, i.e. on page 160 with the line "if Emily is cautious, shouldn't I be?"

One piece of language that struck me as effective is also on page 160, and that is the following passage: "Because work outbids play, because conversations about illness-my own, those of friends, and of family- overwhelm those about health, because I am awkward in middle age, this burst of youth delights me." This sentence reveals so much about the author: that she has a disease, that she's older, that she's attracted to Emily's youth. This sentence also leaves the reader wanting more, as in what disease does she have?

Another piece of language that I felt resonate with me from Rogers' essay is "Emily takes off like a burst of caffeine: Race you to the corner." This simile is relatable to anyone who's ever felt the rush of soda, coffee, or tea as it hits their bloodstream, and this sentence also illustrates Emily's "burst of youth" nature that the author had previously described.
