One of the reasons for traveling Pico Iyer writes about that stuck with me is how in travel, we "lose ourselves...to find ourselves." Many people travel to forget about home, their worries, stresses, and to-do lists. People want to lose themselves and their home life, or reality, in the extraordinary sights the travel destination provides. However, while we relax, we find ourselves. We find the things important to us and our true selves in the exploration and calm.
Second, travel allows us to "slow down time and get taken in." Time slows down because we are not caught up in the fast-pace life we lead at home. We have fewer worries and responsibilities. A successful journey is one in which you totally immerse yourself in the culture. You cannot fully experience a new place unless you lose control and try to live like a native would in that spot.
I also strongly agree with Iyer when he says that while traveling, he Is usually "easily excited...and even kinder." While abroad, the simplest things can amaze you, such as an old church or a water fountain. You might see the same type of objects in an area you are familiar with and not fully appreciate its beauty. While traveling, I also feel more inclined to be grateful, appreciative, and kind. Finally, "the best trips...never really end." They live with you forever.
